Home. It is a physical manifestation of our identity. As a built environment it is imbued with social and cultural meaning, while it provides shelter, security, and a place for our daily activities. Home is the surrounding landscape, both public and private. Home is also an emotional space where we find a sense of belonging and attachment.
Home is a complex concept that has a diversity of meanings for all of us, but especially for those who are displaced. In this exhibition a dozen women, from Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and Palestine, share their lived experiences of home…from streets filled with the scent of jasmine and tables where tea connects friends and family to the trauma of war and the need to seek refuge. Home has often been neither ‘here‘ nor ‘there‘, but somewhere in between.
For all of the women whose stories are told in this installation, this city has become their home. The process of integration is long and complicated, filled with frustration and joy, new experiences and the heaviness of all that has been lost. Preserving their cultures, building new relationships, and feeling welcome and whole in a new place is how most now define home.
As these women create a space where empathy flows freely, they are also countering the dangerous rhetoric, war mongering, and restrictive immigration policies that are far too prevalent, today and throughout America’s history. We are all asked to recognize and reject the xenophobia and racism inherent in the calls ‘to go home’, knowing that it is in the honoring of our differences and the connectedness of our humanity that our shared home is strengthened.
This immersive exhibition, with its art, sound, texture, and space for conversation, is a celebration, an education, and a call to action. The historically domestic interior of Yellow House has become a space where we are asked to walk in the shoes of these women…from memories of their homelands to difficult experiences with war and displacement… and invited to sit with at their table for shared learning and communal reflecting on the question of what is home and the role we each play in creating communities that are truly welcoming.
Yellow House is honored to co-create this experience with Artugee, an organization that uses art as a means for social connection, economic empowerment, and advocacy for Arab American women making their home in Northeast Florida. We are also humbled to be working with the Florida Immigrant Coalition and We Are All America organizations. The art experience, in both physical and programmatic form, was co-curated by Malath Alarnosi, Basma Alawee, and Hope McMath. The stories, messages, and tangible content was created, in part, through a series of shared workshops where more than a dozen women came together forming a gracious and courageous community of artists, storytellers, organizers, researchers, and makers of marvelous food.

وصف المعرض الوطن. إنه المظهر الملموس لهويتنا. كبيئة متكامله مشبعة بالمعنى الاجتماعي والثقافي، في حين أنها توفر المأوى والأمان، فهي مكان لأنشطتنا اليومية. الوطن هو المناظر الطبيعية المحيطة، سواء العامة أو الخاصة. الوطن هو أيضاً مساحة عاطفية حيث يجدد شعوراً بالانتماء والتعلق. الوطن هو مفهوم معقد يتنوع معناه لنا جميعاً، ولكن المفهوم الخاص بالنسبة لأولئك الذين نَزحوا. في هذا المعرض تشارك عشرات النساء، من العراق وسوريا ومصر وفلسطين، تجاربهن الحية في الوطن… من الشوارع المليئة برائحة الياسمين والطاولات التي يشارك بها الأصدقاء والعائلة الشاي الى صدمة الحرب والحاجة إلى اللجوء. وكان الوطن في كثير من الأحيان لا ‘هنا’ ولا ‘هناك’، ولكن في مكان ما بينهما. وبالنسبة لجميع النساء اللواتي تُقال قصصهن في هذا التركيب، أصبح هذا البلد الآن موطنهن. إن عملية التكامل طويلة ومعقدة، مليئة بالإحباط والفرح، والتجارب الجديدة، وثقل كل ما ضاع. الحفاظ على ثقافاتهم، وبناء علاقات جديدة، والشعور بالترحيب وكله في مكان جديد هو الآن يُعِرف بالوطن. هذا المعرض غامر، مع الفن، والصوت، والملمس، والغذاء، ومساحة للمحادثة، هو احتفال، تعليم، دعوة إلى العمل. الداخلية المحلية تاريخيا من البيت الأصفر، لفترة قصيرة، سوف تصبح جزء من المعرض حيث يطلب منك أن تسير في أحذية هؤلاء النساء ودعوة للجلوس معهم على طاولتهم للتعلم المشترك والتفكير بانعكاس مفهومهن على مسألة ما هو المنزل. وبما أن هؤلاء النساء يَخلقن مساحة يتدفق فيها التعاطف بِحُرية، فإنهم يتصدون أيضاً للخطاب الخطير، ترويج الحروب، وسياسات الهجرة التقييدية السائدة أكثر من اللازم، اليوم وطوال تاريخ أميركا. جميعنا مطالبون بالاعتراف بكراهية الأجانب والعنصرية المتأصلة في الدعوات إلى “العودة إلى الوطن” ورفضها، مع العلم بأن تعزيز وطننا المشترك هو من أجل احترام خلافاتنا وترابط إنسانيتنا. ويتشرف فريق البيت الأصفر بالمشاركة في خلق هذه التجربة مع Artugee، وهي منظمة تستخدم الفن كوسيلة للتواصل الاجتماعي، والتمكين الاقتصادي، والدعوة للنساء الأميركيات العربيات اللاتي يصنعن منازلهن في شمال شرق فلوريدا. وقد شارك في رعاية التجربة الفنية، في شكل مادي وبرنامجي على حد سواء، ملاذ العرنوسي، وبسمة علاوي، وهوب ماكماث. تم إنشاء القصص والرسائل والمحتوى الملموس، جزئياً، من خلال سلسلة من ورش العمل المشتركة حيث اجتمع أكثر من ١٢ امرأة لتشكيل مجتمع كريم وشجاع من الفنانين، والرواة، والمنظمين، والباحثين، وصناع الطعام الرائع.
